Richard J. Jacobson, a civil trial lawyer since 1977, concentrates his trial practice in the areas of commercial litigation, legal and financial malpractice, business torts and lawyer discipline. Mr. Jacobson is a member of the Illinois Bar, the District of Columbia Bar, an Associate Member of the Virginia Bar and has been admitted pro hac vice in other jurisdictions in the United States. He has been a member of the Federal Trial Bar of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois since 1983.
Mr. Jacobson has been elected a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor limited on a state-by-state basis to 1/3 of 1% of the lawyers in a state. Since 1998, Mr. Jacobson has been an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University Law School where he regularly teaches a clinical course, Introduction to Trial Advocacy. Mr. Jacobson has also served as a faculty member of the Illinois Professional Responsibility Institute, sponsored by the Illinois Supreme Court's Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. Mr. Jacobson is a founding member and past Chair of the Chicago Bar Association's Committee on Legal Malpractice. He is a member of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers ("APRL") and regularly addresses the APRL membership on issues pertaining to professional responsibility.
Mr. Jacobson has written extensively on law-related matters including legal ethics, disciplinary defense, jury selection and the presentation of expert testimony. Over the past several years, Mr. Jacobson has co-authored a semi-annual national survey entitled Lawyers' Liability and Discipline, a publication that is used in teaching materials for law schools and CLE programs. He has written articles on lawyer's obligations to report lawyer misconduct, exposure relating to law firm billing practices, law firm governance and responding to initial disciplinary inquiries. Mr. Jacobson has been a featured speaker at numerous national, regional and local conferences concerning lawyer's professional liability and discipline.
